Meth

Today, has been a terrible terrible day. It all started out with getting our mail. All we got in the mail today was a single piece of mail, from the PA Department of Health. So I was all 'Heyyy derpenstein this looks important!' And Chris was all 'garbleaksgjwoiegaslkbna' because he was still in bed, but he said I could open it. So I open it and see this:

Not Today Either!

I was out with my Pop the other day, and we were talking about the Powerball jackpot being so high. He said the first thing he'd do if he won was donate to St Jude's Children's Hospital. It kind of caught me off guard, and surprised me a bit. He talked passionately about all the good they do for sick children, while running on donations. My Pop doesn't really talk about causes, charities, or politics. It's usually fishing, cooking, or gardening. To hear him so passionate about a charity was surprising, but in a good way. His birthday is coming up at the end of the month, and I wasn't sure what to get for him. I think we might order him some address labels from St Jude's and make a small donation in his name.

Google+

I've been putting it off for awhile, but I finally set up my Google+ profile. I never really felt a need for it, as Facebook satisfied my social networking needs sufficiently. There's lots of advantages related to my blog that spurred me to take the dive.

It was a bit tricky to get figured out at first, but I think I got the hang of it. This blog is exciting to me in so many ways. It helps me save memories, share with friends and family, keep my vocabulary and writing skills fresh, contribute to the household financially, share my fiction, connect with people, and so much more. The crazy part is that it hasn't nearly hit its full potential yet.

I'm excited to see where this year takes us. So many amazing things happened in 2015.

Having trouble sleeping tonight, not sure why. Chris is in bed for work, but I got up for a bit because my tossing and turning was just keeping him awake.

Today went by really quick. He worked nine hours instead of his usual ten, and when he got home we ate a New Year's dinner with my family. We hung out for a bit and watched Burn Notice and then hit the hay. We were both really tired and crashed early, but now for whatever reason I'm awake.

Acceptance

Chris and I stayed up until about 4am. I kicked his butt at Exploding Kittens. The bottle of Moscato I picked out was really good. Silly us, we didn't have a corkscrew! Luckily my grandparents did. Shows how often we drink. We stayed cuddled up in bed until around lunchtime, and then got up and ran out to the store for a few supplies.

I made pollo guisado today! We decided that would be our New Year tradition. It got pretty good. Chris demolished his plate of food. I didn't really make any resolutions per say this year. New Year's resolutions can be a great way/starting point for major life changes, but at this point I don't have anything drastic I need to work on every day of the year except being happy, and trying to serve the happiness of my life, home, and relationships as best as I can. I mean sure, I could resolve to lose weight or something cliche like that, but I think that's best done in lifestyle changes, and I'm fighting an uphill battle with steroids on that one. So, I guess at the end of all this blabbering, I just resolve to do the best I can at living as long and well as I can.

Happy New Year!

Chris got home from work and we discussed insurance options for a bit. He could tell I'm really frustrated at our current options and situation. I'm probably going to go with the cheaper option and just hope for the best with getting the proper meds approved, etc.

We dropped it for now though. I want to enjoy celebrating the New Year! Last year he had to work so we didn't get to spend it together, but this year he's off tonight and tomorrow! Yay!

Tux decided that destroying one of my wall vinyls would be a fun project today. I would have been more upset if this one hadn't been falling off already on its own. Which is what probably sparked him to remove it the rest of the way. I have been meaning to fix it, but hadn't gotten around to it yet. Now, it's removed entirely. It opens up another spot to hang some of our gorgeous wedding photos at least!

We ran out and got two bottles of a sweet white Moscato at the liquor store, and picked up some chicken to make some pollo guisado tomorrow.

We have traditions to make!

This is my first New Year ringing it in as an Archeval!

Planning on playing Exploding Kittens and Cards Against Humanity, watching some Netflix, and drinking some wine tonight. Tomorrow we'll spend the day together, drink some more wine, and eat some good food. Sounds good to me.

Whatever this new year brings I have the love of my life by my side, my home, family, friends, and pets.

So long 2015! You were an interesting year! Plenty of challenges, some near-death experiences, but also lots of love and laughs. Here's hoping 2016 is more exciting, but less dangerous!

Between a Rock and a Hard Place...

Bah. I am so worn out, and as a result I've been so lazy. The little bit of stuff I am getting done around the house is taking some tremendous inner-dialogue pep-talks. My Tysabri infusion didn't make my stomach as bad as it had been this time. Thankfully so, the increase in steroids has me starving. I'm constantly hungry. It did make me itchy as all hell though. So.itchy. That's annoying.

I've been getting some serious nerve pain in my right hip/leg/foot the past few days. This is the same hip that I broke in a car accident a few years ago and had major surgery on. I'm not sure if the nerve pain is a result of the slow nerve regrowth reaching a certain point after all these years, or if it's my MS. I hate things like this that could be from multiple things. Especially when there's really no way of telling which. If it is from my MS I likely have a flare starting, which is bad news. Last time I had nerve pain in my leg like this that turned into a flare I fell down a set of stairs randomly when my leg went numb.

Email Palpation?

Flip-flopping through a lot of insurance policies right now. My Geisinger policy ends tomorrow, and I start a policy through Blue Cross on the 1st. In February I'm switching to a policy through Cigna.

A key benefit I've noticed for the new year is long-distance doctoring. For my Cigna policy my co-pays have jumped to $30 to see my PCP, and $50 for a specialist. Considering the number of appointments I have in a week sometimes this adds up quick.

'Seeing' a doctor by telephone, video conference, or even email though is free.

Yeah, go ahead, read that again.

Doctor's Orders

I went out to Philly last week to get an musculoskeletal ultrasound done on my hands. They're the only place in the country really that does it so far. It can be even more detailed than an MRI for some things. They found a lot thickening of my joint linings in my hands, but luckily no bone damage.

I'm back to trying to get off steroids again, and paying the price dearly as usual. Steroids are an interesting thing. They can vastly mask the symptoms of a great number of things; making you feel pretty okay. Even if you're very much not. When you're on steroids for a long period though your adrenal glands stop making steroids of their own. Tapering off steroids can make your body literally go into withdrawal if your adrenals don't 'wake up' quick enough. You get sweaty, nauseous. It's pretty much a 24/7 fight or flight response. Put that on top of whatever symptoms of your disease the steroids have been covering up.

I've been on steroids for so long, it's debatable if my adrenals will wake up. So slow and steady is the key, which is hard when all you really want to do is get it over with.

Why stop something that has such great benefits and such crappy symptoms to stopping? Artificial steroids are bad for you. The amount of steroids your body needs is far from an exact science, and changes throughout the day. An excessive amount of steroids in your system causes all types of crappy side effects. Major weight gain, bone thinning, organ damage just to name a few.

Disregard

Busy busy day. I got my entire list of phone calls done already thankfully. I have some chores to do yet, but I'm pretty proud of how focused and efficient I was this morning.

Called my insurance company and the girl was all 'Ohh I don't know whyyy they sent you that. Just disregard it!' And I was all yeah, disregard it until they cancel my policy and my shit's fucked up all month. And she's all 'Ohh but they shouldn't your policy is paid for. I don't understand what the problem is.' And I'm all just because they shouldn't doesn't mean they're not going toooo. And she's all 'Noo, it must have crossed in the mail. Oh wait, you paid early, hmm, I don't know. It will be fine.' And I was all ........

Twenty bucks says my policy gets cancelled anyways now, and I'm going to be pissed.

Scheduled and rescheduled a bunch of appointments. Cancelled our Sands reservation because of finances.

I'm most definitely getting sick. I'm rocking a wicked earache and some stuffiness today. Started antibiotics yesterday because I've been rocking a fever off and on so I knew it was coming. Luckily I have some time yet before the wedding to kick it. I hate fevers because I get cold, and then I bury myself in warm things and suddenly the fever relaxes and my MS is ready to have a melt down between the fever and the eight thousand layers of heat I've buried myself in. It's good times.

Not sure what I'm cooking today. Most likely leftovers for lunch. Dull day, but considering all the hectic days ahead some quiet time isn't a bad thing.

Woo Girls

Yesterday turned out to be a fairly lazy day. I got some things done, but at a very slow pace in between a lot of slacking off.

Finished our seating chart for the wedding, and it looks pretty damn professional if I do say so myself. Which, is admittedly pretty unnecessary considering it's for me. It's not like I'm making it for a client, but hey, it's pretty! We have roughly 95 guests coming to our wedding, roughly twenty of them being children.

It's a bit higher of a count than I expected, and it doesn't seem like that many people looking at the list. It is though; I double counted.

Got a letter in the mail from Geisinger today that they're cancelling my insurance as of 9/30 for non-payment, and to call by 10/31 to avoid cancellation.

Extra Virgin

I was so tired last night. I was a bit worried I'd read the blog I wrote last night and what I thought was an account of my day would read more like 'purple unicorns glitter gasodjoiwi pizza woijiodfjso cheesecake'. Thankfully that was not the case. We went to bed and Chris put on Scream because he's in Halloween mode and I've never seen it. I'm a child when it comes to horror movies. I'm always paranoid I'm going to have nightmares and what not.

My Letter to the President

Dear President Obama,
I'm sure you get quite an abundance of mail, and I'm rather skeptical as to whether this will ever actually reach you. I'm sure reading every letter would be quite time consuming. If you are actually reading this, I'd like to say I'm honored. Seven months ago someone ran a red light leaving me with a broken hip, and a dented spirit. Since that time you have been involved in a series of firsts for me. At the age of twenty-five years old I was confined to a nursing home for months. I was adamant on still being able to vote, and being able to obtain an absentee ballot. Even a bit panicked when it came time to transfer home during the same time I needed to handle my ballot. I wanted my vote to count. You were the first President I ever voted for and loudly supported. The first campaign I ever donated to, even though I couldn't work and had very little money. As well as the first President I have ever written a letter to. I was in a second car accident as a passenger shortly after being released from the nursing home.
I've been through many challenges in my life. I've probably been counted in far to many statistics. I grew up in poverty, and in the shadows of pedophilia and alcoholism. Thanks to the generosity and kindness of others I never gave up. I grew into a strong yet humble woman. I worked my way up the economic ladder, while never forgetting to give back. I volunteered with police departments across our great nation. I was even filmed on Dateline NBC's "To Catch a Predator" series aiding the police. I gave my time to an animal shelter local to me. I never forgot how far I'd come.
This unfortunate situation I've found myself in opened my eyes to the nightmare that is our health care system, and our need for reform. It's one thing to hear about it, and to sympathize. It is a totally different universe though to experience the mayhem of the endless phone calls, and being forced to make the decision between your rent or your health care premiums. If it was not for your reforms, due to my pre-existing condition (my broken hip), I would not be able to receive health insurance. I want to sincerely thank you for that. I also want to invite you to view our health care system from my new perspective.
I was terminated in September of 2012 by my employer of over six years. Due to my broken hip I could no longer perform my job as required. I am receiving sixty percent of my salary through an employer paid disability benefit. I had to switch over to health insurance through COBRA. The cost of COBRA takes about thirty-five percent of my net income. Thirty-five percent of sixty percent is a painful number. Who knew numbers could hurt? I currently get no relief from the insurances of those who hit me (both were on cellphones while driving). I have to file suit, which unfortunately takes years. I had to resort to applying for welfare.
Switching to COBRA in itself was a bit of a nightmare. It takes about three weeks for your first payment to "process". In the meantime you're technically covered, but no doctor’s office will take it anyways. It was a nightmare. MRI's had to be rescheduled, appointments cancelled. I simply did not have the funds to pay out of pocket and wait to get reimbursed. I just got fired. There was a battery of phone calls that ended along the lines of "Yes, your insurance company told us that you're technically covered, but we have to wait until it says so in the computer." Frustrating.
I was relieved when I was accepted for welfare. It wasn't much, but I was sure the health insurance would be a huge help. Perhaps I could even drop my COBRA; that would be a huge help. Unfortunately, it wasn't that easy. Having a broken hip is pretty unpleasant; beyond the metal plate and eight screws. There's surgeons, orthopedists, family doctor, physical therapists, radiologists, even psychologists. (I was diagnosed with PTSD) So far only one of them accepts the insurance I receive through the state of Pennsylvania. When you have a broken hip you just can't stop going to the specialists you need. I'm looking at having to get around seven replacements in my lifetime.
I begrudgingly decided I had to keep my insurance through COBRA. Things were very tight, but I managed. Managing is the important part. Then came the bills. Most doctors’ offices have this new policy. If you owe them money, you're not making an appointment. I can't skip appointments. A: Because I have a broken hip, and B: Because then I'd lose my disability income. So, then began the phone calls trying to figure out just why exactly I had all these bills coming in. Turned out switching your insurance through COBRA wasn't just a fancy new expensive payment plan, but an entirely new policy with fresh deductibles. Deductibles run by calendar year, so I got an entire new set of deductibles again in January. That's a total of one-thousand dollars in deductibles and four-thousand dollars in out of pocket expenses in a matter of months. I dread checking my mail.
Unbelievably, it gets worse. I can only keep my health insurance through COBRA for one year. My benefits will end around August of 2013 through COBRA and I will have to search for individual self-pay policies. I've already begun looking, because once again I will have to go through those three to four weeks of "processing" where no doctor’s office will see me. I'd rather keep it as short as possible. Thanks to your reform I can at least find insurance with my pre-existing condition. (Broken hip) It seems insurance companies have found a way around that though. Sure, they have to legally insure you, so they'll just make it so unattainably expensive and worthless that no one can afford it. The self-pay policy that I will be switching to when my COBRA benefits expire is one-hundred dollars more expensive, with twice the deductible, almost twice the out of pocket expenses, a prescription deductible of five-hundred dollars, and a prescription plan that only pays 70%. I have to pay more money, to be in an even worse situation then I already am. This is the best option out there that I can find. If I hadn't been on COBRA and been offered a "conversion" package, it would have cost me over three-hundred dollars more a month. It's sheerly unbelievable.
Shortly after I switch to my own self-pay insurance in August, January will roll around once again with a whole new set of deductibles to bring along with it. That's another two-thousand dollars in deductibles and six-thousand dollars in out of pocket expenses.  Due to COBRA I will have had to pay insurance deductibles five times in less than a year and a half, with my rates sky-rocketing after my COBRA period expires. Three thousand dollars in deductibles, and ten thousand dollars in out of pocket expenses in less than a year and a half. My original policy for the year, before this nightmare began cost me only about 15% of that.
I am paying physically and emotionally every day for someone else’s mistake, and I am forced to sacrifice my financial stability to maintain health insurance because of it. The insurance companies are profiting off of my misfortune with their battery of deductibles and extreme rates. I've been forced to sell my possessions just to pay medical bills. Is this the American dream we wish to portray? I am the face of America begging for health care reform. I am living the nightmare of a broken system that no one sees from the outside. I beg of you to create some good from my misfortune and use my experience to educate others about the reform we so desperately need.
                Yours Truly,
                                Trisha Bootsma
